Desde una perspectiva social y cultural sobre la guerra civil y la dictadura franquista, este artículo analiza el proceso de construcción del mito de la «gesta heroica» de Belchite, puesto en marcha por el franquismo ante los acontecimientos traumáticos del asedio y toma de la villa aragonesa, por el ejército republicano, en septiembre de 1937. Se estudian los discursos y ritos practicados en torno al mito, así como las identidades excombatientes de sus actores; elementos que la dictadura supo manejar para reforzar sus apoyos sociales. Finalmente se señalan las pervivencias y consecuencias que tal fenómeno de mitificación legó al presente.
Within a social and cultural framework on the Spanish Civil War and the Franco’s dictatorship, this article analyzes the making of the Myth of the «Heroic Deed» of Belchite, run by the francoist side in the view of the traumatic defeat suffered in this Aragonese village in september 1937. Discourses and rituals performed around the Myth are studied, as well as the francoist veterans’ identities. These elements were managed by the dictatorship in order to reinforce their social support. Mythification bequeathed some social and cultural consequences still visible nowadays.
