Desde el comienzo de la década de los noventa, el concepto de religión política goza de buena salud académica. A pesar de que, fundamentalmente, las historiografías sobre el nazismo y el fascismo, aunque no sólo, se han renovado en los últimos años a través de las tesis que han caracterizado a estos regímenes como formas modernas de religión política, tanto el término como la idea a la que apunta cuentan con una heterogénea historia detrás. Comenzando por un estudio de la genealogía del concepto, este artículo es una aproximación al debate actual sobre la validez o invalidez de la religión política como herramienta analítica y sobre su utilidad interpretativa. Para ello, se examinan las principales aportaciones de los autores que lo utilizan contraponiéndolo a las voces críticas que cuestionan la eficacia de dichas tesis.
From the beginning of the 90’s, the concept of political religion has reached an outstanding place in the Academy. If it’s true that —specially, but not only— the historiographies about Nazism and Fascism has known a renovation during last years through their interpretations as modern forms of religion, the term as well as the concept have their own history behind. Beginning with a study of the genealogy of the concept, this article is an approximation to the current debate about the validity or invalidity of the political religion as an anlytical tool and its interpretative utility. For this aim, the main contributions of the most important authors who subscribe this thesis are analysed in this article as well as the main critics which question the effectiveness of the political religion thesis.
