El objetivo de este artículo es promover la discusión sobre la situación actual de la historia social y proponer algunas vías de renovación de los estudios históricos. En este sentido, se considera necesario no sólo revisar algunos de los supuestos sobre los que se ha asentado dicha historia (como la separación entre cultura y sociedad), sino abrirse a nuevas cuestiones y posibilidades. Entre éstas, se estima de especial importancia la apertura teórica hacia el estudio del mundo material. Pues, como se está poniendo de manifiesto en otras disciplinas, la relación entre acción humana y cultura material es un factor explicativo capital de los procesos históricos. Por tanto, la adopción, por parte de la historia social, de un «giro material» aparece como una vía primordial para su renovación.
The remarks in this paper aim to further discussion of the present situation of social history and to propose new ways of developing historical studies. In particular, it is suggested that there is a need not only for rethinking some of the main assumptions of social history (such as the distinction between culture and society), but for opening up new questions. Of special significance here is the study of the material world, because, as is clear in other disciplines, the relationship between human practice and material culture is a crucial variable in explaining historical processes. Adopting, therefore, a «material turn» seems a fruitful way for renewing social history and improving its explanatory power.
