El giro lingüístico o cultural en el campo de los estudios históricos ha significado el alejamiento de una versión de la historia social estrechamente ligada a los métodos y categorías sociológicos. Sin embargo, el énfasis creciente sobre el papel del lenguaje ha provocado un excesivo debilitamiento del contenido social de la historia y un olvido de las bases materiales de la vida social. El autor de este artículo aboga por una rehabilitación de lo social, aunque sin abandonar las contribuciones hechas por el giro lingüístico. Esta nueva historia social necesitaría reformular el concepto de lo social y elaborar, tomando en cuenta dichas contribuciones, una visión más refinada de la dimensión social de la historia.
The linguistic and cultural turn in historical studies represented an essential discontinuity with an understanding of social history as inescapably built upon sociological categories and methods. Emphasis on language, in contrast, first, theoretically thinned the importance of the social in history and, second, neglected its role as the material ground of human affairs. Nevertheless, the social —this article claims— has to be refigured. This project does not deny the linguistic turn’s theoretical inputs, but rather incorporates them within a revitalized social history, which commences by refiguring the very concept of the «social».
