Entre los objetivos del paternalismo industrial se encontraban garantizarse la reproducción física de la fuerza de trabajo y la docilidad de sus trabajadores. En ambos propósitos interferían negativamente las tabernas, contempladas por los patronos en general como focos de enfermedad, absentismo y sedición. El caso asturiano, y en particular el de la mina de Lieres, reviste un carácter peculiar dado que la presencia de la sidra en estos establecimientos contribuía a amplificar la sociabilidad informal característica de los mismos y tan difícil de controlar por las empresas como potencialmente peligrosa para las mismas, en tanto que forjadora de solidaridades.
Amongst the main aims of industrial paternalism were to ensure the physical reproduction of the workforce and the submissiveness of the workers. The existence of taverns, generally regarded by employers as sources of disease, absenteeism and sedition, had a negative effect on the accomplishment of these goals. The case in Asturias in general, and that of the Lieres mine in particular, shows some peculiarities, since the presence of cider contributed to increase the typical informal sociabilility in these establishments, which meant the strengthening of solidarity between workers and was therefore difficult to control and potentially dangerous for the companies.
