El objetivo del presente artículo es delinear las principales características del esquirolaje en la provincia de Barcelona durante el periodo comprendido entre los años 1904 y 1914. En concreto, se analiza la actuación de los esquiroles durante las huelgas y sus motivaciones para no secundarlas, así como el debate entre empresarios y sindicalistas sobre la libertad de trabajo y el derecho a la huelga. Por último, se examina la construcción extremadamente negativa de la figura del esquirol entre los sectores sindicalistas y su rol legitimador ante las situaciones de violencia y coacción que se verificaban periódicamente durante las huelgas.
The objective of this article is to outline the main features of strikebreaking in Barcelona province from 1904 to 1914. Specifically, we analyze strikebreakers’ behavior during strikes and their motivations, as well as the debate between entrepreneurs and trade unionists on the freedom of work and the right to strike. Finally, we examine the syndicalists’ construction of an extremely negative figure of strikebreakers, and its legitimizing role in situations of violence and coercion that periodically occurred during strikes.
