At end of the 1970s, the European strategic balance had changed in favour of the Warsaw Pact. The American failure in Vietnam, the growing military gap with the Soviet Union and the belief that NATO would be incapable of preventing a Soviet attack presaged a war in Europe. However, in five years this situation changed and the balance of forces shifted to the Allied side. The article analyses the elements that transformed the European strategic balance.
